FOR YOUR EYES ONLY!
Posted by mahananda on Sep 25, 2012 in Uncategorized | 0 commentsIn Eastern cultures, the population maintain a “wellness program” on a daily basis which includes visits to complementary medicine providers, i.e., acupuncture, holistic spas, herbal programs, daily practices of tai chi, yoga, meditation, pranayama and so on. In America, the population will go to the doctor only when a symptom has developed beyond home remedies or complementary medicine treatments. The latter is most unfortunate in most cases. Preventive medicine or practices support a healthy body and lifestyle.
For starters, consider taking yourself to an eye doctor for a regular exam. Treat your eyes like the mandatory oil change in your car which, according to my Dad is the “life force” of the vehicle. Totally true to this day! When an eye doctor looks into your eyes, they can see things that you can’t. A huge reason to keep regular eye checkups on your personal calendar.
The constant glare of a computer or iPhone into your eyes eventually takes a toll on your vision which can be avoided by wearing “glare proof” lens. When it comes to eye wear, one size does not fit all! Various lifestyles, occupations and activities require different types of frames and lenses. Matching your unique life style needs with the appropriate eye wear will not only improve your vision and protect your eyes, but also enhance your look, performance, safety and comfort. Sunglasses are strictly for sun wear. UV protection and sun-related vision damage, as well as, wind, dust, pollen and comfort to dry eyes, enhancing contrast and reducing tearing, squinting and eyestrain.
No excuses, PLEASE! Costs of exams without insurance is under $100. At best, one pair less of expensive shoes or a dress can keep and ensure healthy eyes to enjoy what is important to you in your life. Lenscrafters is constantly running affordable ads for your “eye care program.”
Be kind to your eyes! Take time to look away or walk away from the computer. Pause. It is okay to use cool packs on the eyes and cool towels stored in your fridge gives you some time to restore and reset the elasticity of your tenacity.
Be mindful to be attentive to your eyes. CELEBRATE their true function. Take note when it is time to honor over use of them and replenish them by simply sitting back, no rubbing PLEASE, gently closing your eyes and ALLOWING them some time to restore. Every segment of your day has enough room in it to take care of yourself. As Nike says, JUST DO IT.
FYI, adults over 40 are usually the at risk vision population but the computer generation may be included in that concept given the EXCESS in every aspect of their daily lives. Look for common vision warning signs:
Impaired vision at night, especially while driving, caused by the effects of bright light;
Difficulty reading and doing close-up work;
White or cloudy spot in the lens of the eye (instead of looking black, the pupil appears milky or white);
Problems with glare from lamps or the sun;
Trouble seeing things to your side;
Changes in the way you see color;
Double vision or halos around lights;
Frequent changes in your eyeglass prescription.
One in four [1:4] children have vision problems: squinting, closing/covering one eye, holding a book too close to the face, losing his/her place while reading, excessive clumsiness, using a finger while reading, tilting the head to one side, performing below potential, short attention span or frequent daydreaming or rubbing eyes repeatedly.
Foods that nourish the eyes: Apples, Grapes, Carrots, Cucumber, Spinach, Milk, Turnip, Cheese, Butter, Lettuce, Oranges, Saurkraut, Almond oil, Blueberry juice. Eating healthy contributes to the health of all aspects of the physiological functions of the body, including the EYES! DO THE RIGHT THING!
